“When you feel life out of focus, always return to basic of life. Breathing. No breathe, no life.” ~ Mr. Miyagi ??
Nourishing the mind is of utmost importance during these extraordinary times. Karate isn’t just physical. It’s very much a mental discipline too.
.
Legendary martial artist Bruce Lee said it best: “The possession of anything begins in the mind.”
.
Most of the time, we all have loads of thoughts cluttering our minds, whether they are issues surrounding us in our personal life, or problems we face every day in the real world. Martial arts teaches us to clear the mind through meditation. It’s a daily practice that helps us prepare our minds for training.
.
Students can enrich their mind by learning how to breathe properly. By training ourselves how to breathe correctly, we are able to control our state of mind, and we gain a sense of calm that invites serenity and balance into our lives.
.
Also one of biggest assets in a combat situation is to be able to move naturally. And there is no more a natural bodily function than breathing.
.
Correct breathing is important. The brain depends on oxygen to function properly. In a martial arts context, the brain must constantly function at a high level to enable practitioners to focus on their environment and their opponents in any combat situation. Without this focus, a martial artist’s reaction will be slow, and consequently, achieving a successful outcome in combat becomes unlikely. Breathing is also one of the most important things for maintaining our health.
.
During our current lockdown situation, take some time each day to practice your breathing.
